Confrontation and being confronted – The Middle of Things

Too big for a pill? Then rejoice: it’s a suppository.

I love complicated headlines.

What is it about? Well, I am a social worker and in my company we work with a concept called “confrontative pedagogy”, which in the end is nothing more than confronting clients with their responsibility and their actions but also with the resources and their potential to work out solutions for why XY has gone wrong.

This is a pretty powerful way to remind the other person of their self efficacy, empowerment and their responsibility to lead a self determined life in a meaningful way for themselves and for society, if you will.

Since self efficacy plays a great role in my life and is one of the biggest determiners of my identity, it is worthwhile to delve a bit deeper into the fact why it’s problematic to confront others without the ability to swallow the pill of being confronted by others.

If I only confront others without leaving space for others to confront me, I would only be a selfish b$%)rd that thinks he’s always right. Well, there are times this hubris helps, but in the end, I would only fall into a very deep hole if I wouldn’t let myself endure the miracles of the reflection of my behavior through others.

On the other hand, it gives me a good feedback and a good marker where I stand in this world if I let others find things they may confront me with. Nobody’s perfect and I would sound like a high school teacher if I claimed to always be right.

It serves my own understanding of other people and practices my empathy for others. And it grounds me.

In the end, leaving the space for others to confront me, I have the great opportunity to readjust my own role in my own system without succumbing to the hubris of thinking of myself as being some sort of demi god.

The dilogy “Illium/Olympos” (by Dan Simmons) gave me good impulses to think about the human hubris πŸ˜€

Until next time, keep up the faith in yourself and take one step at a time.
