The Clear Horizon

From oblivion of alcoholism into the light of sobriety

When medication is not the last resort, but helpful.

Why settle for one tree, when there‘s a whole forest to hug…?

So it finally happened: I have been prescribed methylphenidate.

And you know what? It’s great! It’s not that I feel much different from before in terms of cognition or behavior. It simply supports my everyday getting-by in a way reading glasses will ease the problems I have with reading as a result of my age.

And, no, I am not using medication as an excuse not to “work on myself”. God knows I prefer this way over medication, but the medication as such helps profoundly in one way that is not only stabilizing my motivation and dopamine levels:

All the energy that I need to bring up each day to stay focused in my job and my daily routines is now not depleted by the end of the day. On the contrary: Since I have more energy due to working more energy efficient due to my improved concentration and motivation, my energy levels stay full enough to indulge in pastime activities and my kids without the fear of having forgotten something important. And this is also supported by the methods I use to keep myself going that I have installed way before knowing about ADHD and medication.

And another good thing: I see the bad advisor even less!

I could embrace a whole forest!

Until next time, keep up the faith in yourself and take one step at a time.
