It’s a question of training, mindset and perspective, I guess.
Given a situation that is truly mind-blowing, fatal or leaves no choice otherwise, it will be difficult to find a possibility of choice.
I think, as long as you find a space to maneuver or find a little headspace, though, there can always be a micron of a faint possibility to choose.
Have you ever heard of the Kobayashi-Maru-Test of Star Trek? Google it. AI will surely shortly brief you. It’s a no-win-scenario in which you are being tested for your morally correct choice. It’s a dilemma where there is no way to win or choose right.
If you are not James Kirk, that is. He cheated his way out. And this is such a fundamental concept, that it defines the whole of James Kirk’s character. Losing or surrendering to circumstance is simply not in his mindset.
I don’t mean to say that we all should be more like James Kirk, but working on a mindset that allows you to think outside of the box gives you, maybe, the headspace you need to have a choice after all.
And that is why I dive into RPG and Cosmic Horror, because it is a mildly and sublime way of teasing my anxiety and fear in order to sensibilize myself for possible choices.
It’s a bit like training extreme scenarios in emergency situations, like in military or police maneuvers, like roleplaying in social work extreme scenarios, self defense or anti aggression seminars, anxiety sensibilisation and so forth.
It gives you, hopefully maybe, the possibility to push the boundary or tipping point of when you only find yourself able to flee, fight or freeze.
And that is something that also comes from self efficacy, at least in my life concept. It sharpens my senses and gives me strength, resilience, confidence.
And that in turn gives me the headspace that, hopefully maybe, makes just the difference if I have a choice in a hopeless situation or not.
And only if it’s the choice whether to succumb or to resist.
Until next time, keep up the faith in yourself and take one step at a time.
