Giving meaning to an indifferent World – How to defy Nihilism

Enjoy life, Hannibal L. said, didn‘t he…?

Don’t get me wrong. I love Thomas Ligotti. I love him for his writing style, his slow pace horror that is lingering around for a long time and the thoughts his writing provokes in a very existential manner.

But the things I love about Ligotti is exactly the things I despise and fear about him: His nihilistic, antinatalist worldview.

I appreciate life. I appreciate the universe and the meaningful way we can define our reality and our lives, especially when garnished with the philosophical aspects of Spinoza’s pantheism and theories about consciousness being a quantum field, about a conscious universe and that every experience can be meaningful.

This leads me to the thoughts, that every human consciousness has a meaning, even though the vast expanse of the universe is indifferent to us humans.

Even if there is no universal consciousness or quantum field of consciousness, I think every decision and every move is meaningful. To say it with the words (assumably wrongly attributed to) Sir Anthony Hopkins:

“None of us are getting out of here alive, so please stop treating yourself like an afterthought. Eat the delicious food. Walk in the sunshine. Jump in the ocean. Say the truth that you’re carrying in your heart like hidden treasure. Be silly. Be kind. Be weird. There’s no time for anything else.”

Take one step at a time and keep up the faith in yourself.
