From oblivion of alcoholism into the light of sobriety

Atomic Habits and self efficacy expectation – Reframing Appointment overwhelm to joyful anticipation

Old lore can be a powerful weapon.

Reframing has long since become a very important tool to re-condition and rewire certain networks in my brain thanks to neuroplasticity. Otherwise I would have been very unsuccessful regarding stopping to drink alcohol.

I have been laboring on the topic for quite a while and I have found some similar difficulties in terms of quitting a bad habit that I have had with quitting drinking: “Just this once”, “I can change things tomorrow”, “I will dive deeper into the topic another time”, “It won’t hurt a last time”.

Bah, what a load of crap.

There is only one way to change that, and that is by getting myself together and change it. Like “you stop drinking when you stop drinking” (Daniel Schreiber) it works the same way “You change when it’s time to change.” The time is now. Or, like Dennis Kassel said: There is no better point in time than now. Going for change will never get any easier than today.

There is nothing particularly new here, only the combination of insights that have lingered around for a long time and that I have never approached. But since I proceeded in my approaches to ADHD and reflected on past experience with James Clear’s Atomic Habits, this one can be a successful approach. And the time to change is now.

So, to cut a long story short:

There are the 4 things that can make an unwanted or unmotivating task motivating: If something is new, a challenge, an urgency or interesting.

The trick now is to combine one of these 4 aspects and combine it with habit building by James Clear.

When I have successfully used this method to reframe my mind so that making an unmotivating task motivating, self efficacy expectations will build up and this can, in term, become a self-fortifying circle.

I’ll let you know.

Until next time, keep up the faith in yourself and take one step at a time.
