We all have the image of the drunkard who will always fall back into his old habits and his addiction once he gets weak. The message seems clear: Even if we commit ourselves to moderated drinking or sobriety, we will eventually fall back into addiction and the next time the struggle only gets harder.
The consensus is: You will always be an alcoholic and you will never be healed.
But, there seems to be another reality, and that says: You can heal and at some point, you will wholeheartedly come to the decision to let go of alcohol for good.
The problem is, this process has a long forerunning process of trying, failing, struggling and doubting. Once you settle for the idea that you really want to stop drinking – especially if you can see an identity without drinking – then you might at some point reach a point, where epiphany strikes and you will come to the decision and conclusion that you can do without alcohol.
And the good thing is: You will find out that this is a decision that doesn’t include lifelong struggling with addiction or sobriety or fearing your life might become boring.
The good thing: It won’t. Neither will it be boring, nor will it be a struggle. It can be done!
Until then, take one step at a time and don’t lose the faith in yourself!
