The Clear Horizon

From oblivion of alcoholism into the light of sobriety

Why Exercising is so important for my sobriety

I talked about why I started exercising to get sober. I want to explain whyt this matters so much to me:

I gained about 20-30 pounds due to the fact that I drank and ate a lot, did little to lose weight and all in all I became very passive in my habits. Much to the discontent of myself and my family.

When I started exercising, it was meant to be a meaningful habit I wanted to restart, but alcohol and my passivity had prevented me from doing sports for a long time.

I started running and that gave me a meaningful habit to question my drinking attitude. In the end, with the final step, running helped me a lot to get over the habit of daily drinking.

Especially the merits I could see (losing weight, gaining confidence and a good constitution) was a very good motivator.

Today, I am very happy about my decision to run every other day and in the time between I do Tai Chi, Krav Maga, gym and climbing once in a while. The anticipatory feeling of boosting my health and self efficacy is such a big driver and motivator that the dopamine and the other good aspects about living healthier steadies my decision to never touch a sip of alcohol again. I am pretty sure about that. Or, as a sobriety coach once said about himself: “I’m confident that I am about 100% bullet proof”.

Till then: Keep up the faith in yourself and take one step at a time.
